In Film making, Television and photography Extreme close ups are used to tightly frame a person or an object.
Close ups show the most detail with showing much of the background which makes it good for making a main character stand out or showing the importance of a certain object.Wikapedia Definition: "Extreme Close Up ("ECU" or "XCU"): The shot is so tight that only a detail of the subject, such as someone's eyes, can be seen."
Usually Extreme close ups are of the eye to show a characters emotions and show the power of that person (for example if they are a main character)
